Marvel’s superhero team Fantastic Four returns to screens hoping to improve on its previous cinematic misfortunes in a new reboot. A new origin story from the comic series, fresh visual effects and a CGI Thing have been brought in to save the franchise, but as this is a 20th Century Fox film, and not part of the Marvel Studios cinematic universe, its success isn’t a safe bet. This time younger versions of Reed Richards, Johnny and Susan Storm, and Ben Grimm gain their signature powers of stretching, fire, invisibility and being a rock from experimental inter-dimensional travel; the rest is pretty familiar stuff. Still, it can’t be worse than past versions, whether they be big budget Hollywood flops or unreleased B-movies made to retain license rights.
