Music Q&A: Nightmare Air
The LA shoegazers are heading to Europe in support of new album Fade Out, released 2 March, and support Gary Numan on northern dates. We talk to guitarist Dave Dupuis
What informs your music and songwriting?
Silence, time alone and the audience’s reaction.
How have you evolved as a band over the years?
I feel like that is the benefit and burden of being an artist. Musically I’m a gear nut, a sonic seeker and get bored with things fast, always looking for the next shiny sound. For Nightmare Air, there is without a doubt an exciting evolution that developed from our first record High in the Lasers to the upcoming Fade Out.
What are you up to at the moment artistically?
Getting ready to start the next record. Swaan [Miller, vocalist] is also an amazing jewellery maker and Jimmy [Smith, drummer] is a sculptor. We’re a bunch of starving artists making things – we have no choice.
What’s on your rider?
Delicious snacks, but most importantly stamped local postcards!
Tell us your most embarrassing or surreal experience.
I’m not sure if I’ve had that yet! I don’t embarrass that easily, and my memory is shit so maybe I’ve actually blocked that moment out, ha!
What song do you wish you’d written?
Honestly, I don’t think I have an answer or this. I enjoy other people’s tunes in a very different way than my own and like it that way. It’s almost impossible for me to listen to my own tracks without pre-conceived ideas that came about while making them, even years after they’ve released. I think a better question is which song do you wish you could cover live and totally nail it. Too many to list, and that totally changes by the day too.
What’s your worst lyric?
The ones with the swears. I live my daily life speaking like a drunken sailor with a profanity in every other sentence. However with lyrics swears can be either very effective or a just a cop-out. I try not to use them.
Tour dates including Prteston, Hull, Isle of Man and Sheffield
